Youth Farm Project: Indigo

Youth Farm Project: Indigo

Local youth learning about food justice at the Youth Farm Project helped me grow a small tuft of Japanese Indigo this summer. During this afternoon workshop we harvested and extracted pigments while discussing the colonialist histories and capitalist systems of the textile industry. Each young farmer then created their own unique indigo-dyed bandana! Shout out to Rafael Aponte and Ann Marie Piombino for collaborating with me, and to Alternatives Federal Credit Union for partially funding this workshop! Find out more about the Youth Farm Project here.

Lifelong: Tapestry Weaving

Lifelong is a vibrant hub for a wide variety of activities geared to older adults throughout the county – activities which promote continued mental, physical, and creative growth. In the summer of 2017 Luna Fiber Studio gave a tapestry workshop to over a dozen enthusiastic adults.

New Roots Charter School

During the fall of 2015, Sarah collaborated with David Streib from the science department of New Roots Charter School to teach a week long natural dye intensive. During this week we foraged locally for dye plants, and learned the chemistry of the entire dye process: mordanting, extraction, and application. This workshop was funded by the Community Arts Partnership Artist in Community Grant.

Painting Adoption Weekend (PAW)

Painting Adoption Weekend (PAW)

In April of 2017, Sarah co-organized an event to bring youth adoptees together to make art. Kids from the ages of 8 - 18, adopted  domestically, internationally, from foster care and from kinship care, created art from clay sculptures, book-making and oral story-telling. Their amazing work culminated in an exhibition at Cornell along with C-CAMP (Cornell's Cross Cultural Adoption Mentor Program). PAW was organized by Carrie Freshour and Michael Stewart (both fellow adult adoptees) and the magnificent Emily Dong. For more information on this event please visit our website or our Facebook page.
