Textile Concepts and Applications

6 Week Summer Course 6/25 - 8/1

Meeting Twice a Week on Thursday evenings 5 - 8pm and Saturday afternoons 1 - 5pm

Instructor: Sarah Gotowka

Level: Open to all makers, nerds and those who want to learn!

A 6 week summer course that reflects (and condenses) some of the textile based classes I’ve taught at universities and colleges over the past decade. This is an in depth study of cloth: our relationship to it, its extensive histories and global politics, and how we can use it to tell a story.

The goal of this class is to guide students through the creative process of making a conceptual textile, while feeding them with as much inspirational information as time allows. The course will consist of two main parts: 1) THINKING (i.e. readings, discussions and slideshows surrounding different aspects of textiles) and 2) MAKING (i.e. demonstrations of a variety of textile techniques and independent making of art).

At the end of these 6 weeks, students will have a finished textile piece that communicates a message, a question or story. This class is perfect for those who want to deepen their knowledge and understanding of textiles, and for those who may be working towards creating a portfolio for exhibitions, grants or applications for art programs.

All materials and equipment available at the studio are included.

This class will meet twice a week for six weeks (Thursday evenings from 5 - 8pm, and Saturday afternoons 1 - 5pm). The schedule is as follows:

Week 1: 6/25 Thursday & 6/27 Saturday

Week 2: 7/2 Thursday & 7/4 Saturday (I know this is a federal holiday so we can cancel class or use it to critique the idea of “independence day,” or watch the Will Smith movie? JKJK)

Week 3: 7/9 Thursday & 7/11 Saturday

Week 4: 7/16 Thursday & 7/18 Saturday

Week 5: 7/23 Thursday & 7/25 Saturday

Week 6: 7/30 Thursday & 8/1 Saturday

*I of course have been plotting and have my plans on what I’d like to share, but these are all subject to change depending on what the class is interested in!

*** Cancellation Policy:

Luna Fiber Studio unfortunately does not issue refunds. We of course understand that life dishes out unforeseen situations at inopportune times, however our class space is extremely limited and classes usually book up months in advance. When you purchase a class with us, you are reserving your spot with our small business and committing to showing up!

In the case of extreme weather conditions or illness of the instructor, class may be canceled and the fee you paid will turn into Studio Credit, where you will be able to use it towards any other service or product offered at Luna.
